Because part of the goal of my dissertation is to continue developing specific theoretical constructs and concepts that are grounded in the real life experiences of a particular segment of the population, theoretical sampling becomes useful for grounded theorizing. (Glasser and Straus, 1967) The selection of participants and site was guided by a particular theoretical orientation that could be seen on the ground. Theoretical selective coding was also applied in order to generate strong concepts from the data that explained the phenomenon observed, that is, youth new media practices and ecologies.

One of the goals of this study is to generate a new theory of Latino/Hispanic immigrant youth incorporation and assimilation to the U.S. society that is based on the use of digital tools and networks and the navigation of different spaces, in the crossing of many worlds, and the construction of multiple identities. Instead of assimilating to a single society, immigrant youth in the 21st century is learning to navigate multiple spaces and adapt to multiple norms.
