Based on fieldwork, preliminary analysis, the work for the digital edge project, literature review, defense, and discussion with members of the committee, I have formulated several hypothesis. Listed as bullet points below, they shape my argument and are likely to become some of the conclusions of my dissertation project.
- New media practices are formed through life long learning. Immigrant youth who have access to technology and digital media related activities for short periods of time, say one or two years in high school, does not develop full competencies. Despite being a matter of gender, race, and class, inequalities in access to technology, peers, mentors, and communities, matters.
- Youth assimilation in the 21st century needs to be thought different, more like a navigation, an active movement of immigrants that involves constructing multiple identities, transiting many worlds, and a fluid notion of positionality.
